Hello everyone,

I have a question for you all. Since before I got my first period, I've had vaginal discharge and it's smelled pretty bad 'down there.' I'm now 17 years old, and it has gotten pretty bad. I also have very irregular periods. I know I should go to the gynecologist, but I'm very scared and I don't talk to my mother about these things at all... so it's hard to ask about that. Does anyone have any idea what this could be and what I could do to stop it or help it any? Please please! I don't know what to do.... sorry if this is TMI!

Thank you. I appreciate your advice.

Smelly discharge could mean you have an infection called vaginitis, it can simply be treated with antibiotics taken in pill form.

If you have never been to a gynocologist you have probably heard horror stories, all I can say is that since I was your age, the equipment has gotten better. At my last exam, not only did they have smaller speculums available, they had plastic ones that were not cold or too big for me.

Before you go to see a gynocologist you should practice relaxing your vagina muscles, like you are going pee. If you tense up on the speculum that can hurt, other wise, usually a vaginal exam will not hurt.

If you could just ask your mother if you can go to the doctor for a yearly exam, then you can get this checked out then.

you might want to check out some of the resources on http://www.vaginapagina.com/

hopefully you will have a good, sensitive doctor for your first appointment. i have to say that my gynecologist is AWESOME and even though the whole process isn't fun, she makes it very comfortable. there are many good docs out there. everyone is nervous their first time, so you're not alone.

sending you good wishes!!
